The Radioplayer
[Back to Nama music]
"The Radioplayer" is a collection of background music made for radioplays over the years. I believe it starts as early as 2003 and continues up to 2011 or there abouts. A few of these pieces have been used and I shall try to indicate that. this collection also holds the Linux Audio Conference themes for 2005, 2006 and one unused version of 2007.
There's one special case amongst these, which is a German story called "Die Dunkelfalle" So forgive me for slipping into my native tongue for the rest of this paragraph.
One last note, before we get to the debatably good stuff: You may use these, if you like, but you have to ask first. For free and small projects there is definitely no money attached. If pieces have been used before, they too were given away for free to free and/or small projects.
- Dark Dreams foreshadows dark events, lurking in the background. Quiet, dangerous and terrible, but subtle. It's working title was "70s Horror", so expect a lot of analogue synth, warm and powerful and an acoustic drumkit. Reminiscent of a certain very wellknown radioplay musician from the late 70s and his title theme for an equally wellknown horror series. :-) At least, if you're German.

- A very short scene blender. This is from the horror/suspense range of pieces. We shall call this A.R. Unfortunately that series has simply gone out of stock, before they had a chance to use them. Thank you Joy for a wonderful job on guitars and bass.

- A.R. Cerberus is a piece for the chase. Well your imagination could paste in the details for the name and its use. :-) Again thank you Joy for a fine spot of guitars and bass. This was menat to be loopable.

- A.R. Evil, the hard way, which means with some balls, pardon, I meant to say some guitars of the distorted kind. I rather like the feel of this. It has something definitely evil and sinister. Thanks go to Joy for guitars, bass and the strings. This was meant to be loopable.

- The relation of the above, only this time more orchestral, without the drums. the idea was, that you could move on up from the orchestral version to the hard version, if you so desired. Joy, thanks for lending a hand in recording this piece and inviting me into your studio. this was meant to be loopable.

- A.R. hospital marked the starting of a story. Someone lying there and telling an important tale. I can't remember, if they died at the best part or not. Again sinister, with suspense crackling, but also pensive in its way. There are the two original parts, which make up this song. They were meant to be loopable.

- The A.R. suspense theme is my absolute favourite from this collection. Although only one rhythm guitar was recorded it has depth and width enough to show a lot of guts. Thanks once more Joy, for guitars, bass and haggling over powerful details. This was meant to be loopable.

- The A.R. suspense theme in its orchestral reincarnation. Well some strings and an organ bass. It was a pleasure recording this at Joy's again and having a helping hand in the process.

- The whole 70's Radioplay range has been used by the Die Drei Fragezeichen Neuvertonungen. A free project, which started producing free (as in beer) dramatisation of the Three Investigators stories, which are so famous here in Germany. Now the Europa Company has started producing them again, releases have slowed up dramatically.
- 70ish radioplay music. this is me trying to be influenced by the biggest name in German radioplay music, Carsten Bohn. He was active in the late 70s and early 80s. His sound coined the atmosphere of many commercial series in that time and practically was a school of its own. I must say, that my music is quite a bit away from him, which is good as well. This is the pensive, darkish bit.

- We continue the 70's series. This is the darker bit.

- 70's series: The happy end.

- 70's series: A fine day, or some uneventful time passing.

- 70's series: The really dark bit. Around midnight or something definitely evil going on (mind you, evil in a teenage/70s way).

- 70's series: the rough bit. Not really a chase, but definitely with some tension.

- 70's series: I started changing the production a little with this piece. A more or less universal bit. Not really happy, not really sad. Comfortable. the beginning makes it just right for the start of a tape. Well get your own "picture".

- 70's series: here is the really sad bit. In teenage stories no one dies, but this might be just the right song for it. There are other depressing events going down though.

- 70's series: a song for the pysical episodes. I'm not a man of violence, upon my oath not. :-)

- 70's series: the final song. Something slightly spooky. Though not in the ghosty kind. More like waiting for the burglar at night, while you hide in the tree. Tense, but not really threatening.

- The Techno improvisation was just that. Done in 2007 perhaps. I liked the Korg TR performance used to play this, still do, but don't tell anyone.
Links: [Download "Techno Improvisation" MP3 (2.5M)] [Download "Techno Improvisation" OGG (2.3M)]
- The dark improvisation is not tht dark. A nice rhythm based chord progression. Slightly rocky in harmonies and the rhythm... I don't know, think of slow going hiphop. Again it's a Korg TR performance.
Links: [Download "Dark Improvisation" MP3 (2.3M)] [Download "Dark Improvisation" OGG (1.8M)]
- The 60s improvisation, is perhaps not all that 60s, all the way through. But it starts of nostalgic enough and doesn't completely leave the ground. It's played on an organ, well a patch of the Korg TR. Yeah, I did get it shortly before, I recorded these three pieces. :-)

- Die Dunkelfalle. It's a horror tale. A tale about fear of the dark. Trying to combine a few personal nightmares with badly picked up techniques of Stephen King, one of the masters bad dreams, and 80s German radioplay series. gut Furcht! :-)

- We get into used terrain again. The LAC (Linux Audio Conference) 2005 Day End theme, which wasn't used. :-) You can hear, where my thoughts have been too long winded on this idea.

- another unused, too long theme. Start of the day at the LAC 2005.

- The intro to a developer talk at LAC 2005, which also, unfortunately turned out much too long. :-)

- This one was played, if a little quiet. :-) The intro to the 2005 LAC.
Links: [Download "LAC 2005 - Intro" MP3 (1.5M)] [Download "LAC 2005 - Intro" OGG (1.4M)]
- The LAC 2005 outro may have been played, but I wasn't there to tell you. Had to dash back to the good old home. :-)
Links: [Download "LAC 2005 - Outro" MP3 (2.4M)] [download "LAC 2005 - Outro" OGG (2.1M)]
- The LAC 2005 User Talk intro, also was too long and beside the point. Yes, I admit, in those days my grasp on the usefulness of a jingle was flimpsy to nonexistent. :-)
Links: [Download "LAC 2005 - User Talk" MP3 (862K)] [Download "LAC 2005 - User Talk" OGG (764K)]
- the LAC 2006 intro however was played and in comparison, I think, that I had learnt a lesson. two might have ben better, granted, but one is good for a start. :-) the idea was to use all the software available to me. So you can hear Csound, Fluidsynth, Ecasound - of course! - LADSPA plugins, Mondrian, jconv(olver) and the essential basic magic of ALSA and JACK.

- We thought it might be nice, to alert everyone, that next we'd play the intro, so I quickly recorded this little bit of pomp and circumstance. :-) OK, more pomp, less circumstance.

- This is the classical version of the 2007 intro to LAC. I know, tat the original was played, but it was meant to be played on a Wavefield Synthesis System, so I didn't have a mixdown. Still this piano version is nice. :-)

- John Sinclair is a German cheap horror series. Based on the inspector of the same name at Scotland Yard, who hunts down daemons, vampires and all hell. It is still written by Jason Dark. We had one radioplay series in the 1980s, which sounded more 70s. the highlight was the soundtrack. Although produced on a home or entertainment organ - I believe -, it was often played for one episode specifically, if not always. The mood, that this created was very unique and to a 13-year-old definitely horrifying, in the way, that it was supposed to. I leave it to you, to unrevel the meaning of this. :-)

- The following pieces were all made for one series of small-time radioplays. There weren't taken. In hind-side I'm not even disappointed about that. I put in some work, but I still have these. :-) - This one is called the grand beginning. Not for the beginning of a play as such, but to colourise some beginning of a story in a story.
Links: {Download "Grand Beginning" MP3 (3.6M)] [Download "Grand Beginning" OGG (3.2M)]
- In memory of something. Perhaps in memory of the dead, a slightly sad love or your times movingt around the pedestrian pricinct with the Indians, that really come from the next stop along the railway. :-)

- Sad times was recorded in 2010, which means much later than the previous two pieces, but it fit in here, so I moved it in bad company. :-) This song was a dream. The dream of a green sound. Don't ask me. I achieved it much better a few months later on my Waldorf and brought it too perfection in my piece Raw Magic, which is part of the album "Soit-il la Vie: Aimante, Intense".

- Mysterious Times was the first piece I recorded on my Waldorf Microwave XT, so it must have been in April of 2011. Someone said, it sounds like a demo piece. Perhaps it does, hear for yourselves.

- There we are back in the old days again. Made for the series, that found somethng truly better. The laid back theme, which I still like. It is laid back and one of my very few early experiments with Hydrogen.
Links: [Download "Laid Back" MP3 (2.7M)] [Download "Laid Back" OGG (2.1M)]
- We continue with the radioplay. Also relaxed, but in a very different way. I called it narrative, for that's, what it was intended for.
Links: [Download "Narrative" MP3 (2.9M)] [Download "Narrative" OGG (2.4M)]
- The almost happy ending might have been better off as a start for a song without meaning. But it might serve the purpose. Though the flavour was perhaps a little too 70ish for that sort of radioplay. :-)
Links: [Download "Almost Happy Ending" MP3 (4.0M)] {Download "Almost Happy Ending" OGG (3.2M)]
- The TB theme. It was meant to go at the end of the stories and there were vocals. But I leave those to myself. Mayhap, you can consider yourselves lucky, that I do. :-)
Links: [Download "TB Theme (no vocals)" MP3 (3.3M)] [Download "TB Theme (no vocals)" OGG (2.8M)]
- The Star Theme Version 1. It was meant to be an intro to a science fiction spaceship sort of series. As you can hear, this is rather raw yet.
Links: [Download "Star Theme - Intro Version 1" MP3 (2.5M)] [download "Star Theme - Intro Version 1" OGG (2.3M)]
- We skip a version and arrive at the third incarnation of the Star Theme Intro. It still failed, but more because of taste than skill.
Links: [Download "Star Theme - Intro Version 3" MP3 (2.6M)] [Download "Star Theme - Intro Version 3" OGG (2.3M)]
- Airy Stars is rather atmospheric. Not the same badge as the Star Themes surrounding it, but it blends in.
Links: [download "Airy Stars" MP3 (1.7M)] [Download "Airy Stars" OGG (1.5M)]
- The Star Theme Outro, so your mental spaceships can return to earth and listen to the credits,so you'd know which brain cell played which character. :-)
