Music For A New World

[Back to Nama music]

This is the first album I started with Nama, and to date the last I finished with it. :-) It was as much musical joy as testing and experiencing the new software environment. Thus it features some unusual pieces. Most is my particular brand of symphonic progressive rock, sprinkled however with a touch of jazz, Arvo Pärt, Bach, some Humpa-Reggae and even 60s beat music. I hope you will enjoy it.

"Music For A New World" was my first real attempt at a concept album. The theme being music through the ages and genres. There are most certainly better works with the same intention, but this happens to be mine, thus I am a little particular to it. :-) I also had a stab at interlacing themes from the different songs. They all come together in the title piece. In some cases I took part of it and made a whole new piece from that and in other cases, I just imported already existing song-themes into the piece. I think it worked out allright.

So before we come to the tracklist and the downloads, that everyone craves, skip the talk, I want to thank Joel Roth for his wonderful Nama, a software, that hasn't ceased to be a source of joy and marvel for me, as well as the developers of LinuxSampler(!), Aeolus, Fluidsynth and all those LADSPA-hackers around the globe. You are great chaps!

1. Music For A new World

This is the title piece and the anticipation and pre-prise of the album. A 25 minute track, which is the well for the rest of the album.

2. J.S. Bach: Prelude In E-Major

Bach's prelude in E-Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book I, played on organ, harpsichord, strings and oboe.

3. A Gospel For The Old World

A spin-off from the title piece. My first attempt at hammering the good Rhodes sample library on the anvil of Nama and LADSPA effects and my first miss. :-) It sounds quite quaint and oldfashioned though.

4. J.S. Bach: Invention In C-Major

Bach's famous invention in C-Major played on a Clavichord, not a real one though. Still close enough.

5. Moonlight Cinema

Moonlight Cinema is the inevitable ballad. :-) A nice piano based piece, revolving around the new piano at the time. You might call it sweet, a little whistful, if you were so inclined, and towards the end pompous. Orchestra gallore!

6. We Failed

Production of a night. Having started in the evening and finished around noon of the next day. I know, that the vocals might have been a little better. Yet I have two excuses: a) I was tired and b) I had just recovered from a bad cold. Even better: I like it that way, full stop! :-) There are some lyrics for We Failed.

7. J.S. Bach: Prelude in B-Minor

The B-Minor prelude from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier arranged for a small brass ensemble, namely tuba, two horns and two trombones. Quite fun! Played live and played swiftly.

8. Feisty Dinner

Feisty Dinner is a disconcerting little song, influenced by Arvo Pärt's symphony No.3 and a little bit of jazz and fusion. The title was inspired by Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Series, more precisely the fourth and final volume, where Jacob mentions, that sometimes "dinner gets feisty". Somehow I found the prospect intriguing. :-)

9. Shambleau

The title is obviously inspired by the eponymous story by Cathrine Lucille Moore. I had my own ideas about the fate of the Shambleau and the way, that people just could live together, if they only got right down to it and talked a little more. The lyrics to that song never got finished, so even I can't tell you anymore from this point in time, since I'm so far removed from the original thought and atmosphere, that accompanied it.

10. Bar Pathetique

The infusion of Beethoven into jazz rock. The famous B-Major theme embedded into some funk/jazz/rock, arranged for hammond, brass, bass and drums. I think it works. What say you?

11. Mr Marple

Yes, very much in the grip of the well-known theme tune for Jane Marple. Since my inspiration sounded more rough and driving, I made it Mr Marple, which honours the original and tells you, what to expect. :-)

12. The Vision Of Love

'T was time for the song to improve the world, to call on the better nature of mankind. :-) I called it raggae, someone else stamped it "humpa". categorise it for yourselves. And here are the lyrics for The Vision Of Love.

13. Dreams Of Music For A New World

Dreams Of Music For A New World is the conclusion of the album theme. It is followed by the epilogue, but really this is it. A big orchestral/synthetic opening, reminiscent of older SciFi movies and a hypnotic, slightly hymnal second part. Since you might not understand the vocals - they were mixed low and sung in a mediocre way -, you will find the lyrics for Dreams Of Music printed in all their psychedelity.

14. J.S. Bach: Prelude In G-Minor

Last, but definitely not least, we finish with good, old Johann Sebastian and his prelude in G-Minor, from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book II. Performed on an organ, namely Aeolus.
